Trenton Dead Linda Stein 9781475240931 Books Reviews
"Trenton Dead" is a good read. The characters are compelling, and there are even a couple who are delightfully unlikeable. Ms. Stein's experience as a court reporter certainly lends credibility and detail to the storyline and there are a few surprises along the way. I'm looking forward to her next novel.
I read "Trenton Dead" in one day and was pleasantly surprised by how much I liked it. The book is very well written, has a good plot, and keeps the reader's attention. As an attorney who practices criminal law in Trenton I can attest that the courtroom scenes are accurate. The book isn't "War and Peace" and don't expect to find the meaning of life in its pages, but if you are looking to escape for a couple of hours with a good clean (well, pretty clean) read, then "Trenton Dead" is it.
It is only fitting that the word “Dead” in the title. I could only think of one good reason why a woman with Linda's writing talent had not published a book; for years, I just assumed that she must be dead.
I knew Linda during her mid to late teens before she carried the “Stein” moniker. She moved from place to place frequently and kept in touch with her friends via letter. Often she would enclose a poem, a short story or a play that she had written with her own pen.
Her way with words was amazing when she was merely 15 years of age. Letters and other works from Linda were shared amongst mutual friends in my hometown. It was a little difficult to listen to my high school teachers and college professors rant and rave about some supposedly great writer. Few of their favorites impressed me. There might be letter waiting for me when I go home from the future Linda Stein, a letter that seemed on the par of a letter from a young “Billy” Shakespeare, or perhaps a teenage Winston Churchill.
Her way with words was rivaled only by her ability to put her soul on paper. When Linda Stein puts her feelings on paper, it was as though she were sharing a piece of her very soul with you. So after losing contact with our old friend, I would periodically check the library card catalog, and later computers, looking for anything written by Linda Stein. Years ago, upon a chance meeting with a mutual friend who had been very close to Linda Stein during youth, I dared not ask what had become of “your old friend Linda.” Since her name did not come up, I just assumed that whatever happened to her was not so pretty.
What a delightful surprise to see that Linda Stein is alive and well and writing!
And her “fictional” characters! Stein has this way of using characteristics of actual people, mixing them around a bit, and creating a fictional person that was enough like a real person whom she has known and admired (or perhaps not admired) and blending their characteristics into new, unique and memorable characters. Some night, I will probably find myself dreaming of litigating cases in front of Judges Sweetwater and Kaplan. As an attorney, I never did much criminal law work, but I would love to walk into courtroom and see Leaf Martin and the men who are challenged by her success! She doesn't challenge my masculinity, but it is kind of fun to see the men whom she does challenge.
Oh, that reporter! She is a combination of all the Jewish guys I know who didn't fit in during their youth, but did well later in life; with those of us who stood up for a victim only to have the victim turn on us; and with a parade of dedicated reporters whom I watched try to make heads or tails out of political campaigns—yet somehow Stein makes this character an all-girl female reporter!
Speaking as a lawyer, Stein definitely knows her way around the courtroom and the legal world. Speaking as someone who “wasted” much of his life in local politics, Linda seems to know her way around that battlefield as well. Linda has never forgotten the heartache of the Vietnam war which scarred our generation so deeply. Her Judge Sweetwater left his legs in Vietnam. Thus Stein reminds of that horrible Southeast Asian tragedy.
Trenton Dead is something you simply must read!
And, Linda, if you are listening. Keep writing please! Someday, I want to tell my grandchildren that I new the great author, Linda Stein, when she was a teenager.
I gave up about a third of the way in. There isn't much to the story, and the characters are bland.
